Assessing the Holiday Weight-Gain Damage

Okay, so I finally did the countdown over the weekend and leapt onto the scale! I was nervous. I thought I’d gained at least five pounds. I’m like a walking cliche with the holiday weight-gain thing.

On Saturday, the news was grim: I’d gained five pounds exactly. Cliche, I tell you.

On Sunday, though, the numbers were back to normal. (???) Now, I didn’t lose five pounds in a day. So I think my scale is off, but I don’t know if it’s “off good” or “off bad.”

Either way, it’s time to get back to better eating! I cleaned out the entire fridge — all holiday leftovers are now gone, and all the crazy candy is, too. (I swear I didn’t eat all of it … although … well, plenty!) Anyway, then I restocked with better choices: greek yogurt, sourdough bread, leafy greens, broccoli, hummus, almonds, all of which I love and keep reading about at Lifescript, so they all became part of my regular diet last summer.

(Now I just have to get rid of this sweet tooth I’ve developed this month!)

How about you? Have you reverted back to healthier eating?

  1. I have seen my weight make that kind of fluctuation in a day. Little things like drinking a lot of water – or very little – or eating a lot of fiber seem to cause jumps like that. Of course, that’s just water weight and doesn’t have much to do with my fitness level.

  2. Yeah, I cleaned all that junk out of my fridge and cupboards this weekend too (except the home made peanut butter and coconut bon bons)! My daughter was talking to me about getting “beach body ready”, I don’t know about all that, but we are gonna watch what we eat better. I think it is ok to let yourself go and gain a little during the holidays, as long as you get back in control after the new year!

  3. I too hate gaining weight. Being on the not so tall end of the spectrum, extra weight does not look good on my frame; and I need all the help I can get!
However, I always just add the weight gain into my my caloric budget around the holidays. We all know it’s going to happen so I figure just go with it from the end of November until the last whistle of Superbowl (which, by the way, is the end of the holiday season for a man…)!
So I have almost a month to go!!!!

  4. I keep telling myself if my clothes still fit then I haven’t gained any weight except that my “big/losse” jeans seem to fit perfectly…hmmmmm. Great idea, Chris! I think I’ll stretch out the holiday season until the end of Superbowl as well… 🙂

  5. Thanks, all, for the tips and support! I love Chris’ idea of stretching things out to the Superbowl, but I think I’d be in bigger trouble then, so I’d better cut my losses while I can. (… or … er … cut my “gains” … whatever. ….)

I’ll check back in with you all to see how we’re doing over the next couple of weeks!

  6. Love Chris’s idea that the holidays don’t officially end until the Super Bowl. True ’nuff for them…

  7. Laurie….

I lost five pounds! Truly…the Dr’s scale said so. Yay! (Went in for nasty cold.) Anyway…I do demo’s at Wal-mart. You know this. Yesterday I did Chipin’s…they are actually very healthy…made out of popcorn. You can eat 18 of them and only have 210 calories…which is very good, compared to other chips. (A tip for you guys!)

  8. Hey Patti, here is another great chip/snack. Multi grain brown rice chips made by blue ginger. They are black sesame and sea salt and you can have 33 chips for only 110 calories and they are really good! Kinda like a light tortilla chip – they have them at costco!
