Laurie,
I must be hormonal today. That post made me cry...hysterically. Poor Nathan. Poor you. I don't think I would have survived being a mum. I remember all my friends kids lovey's. The bankies, the tattered icky blankets... the dolls with no hair...the bald stuffed animals..and all I saw was germs.

Thanks, Rosy, for the compliment. And I think I'm going to have to ask you to share your Pink Baby and DinoRosy story again! (I just love kids' loveys!) :)

Laurie,

Thanks to your linking it above, I have now caught up with your "Loveys" post--and I loved it! It made me think of my own loveys (one of which, I really feel that Iowe Nathan a glimpse of, so if you're ever our way...) and those of my two boys (who most definitely had them. I think we've spoken before about Pink Baby and DinoRosy?).

But now I'm impressed all over again -- with TAG, the up and coming critic. I concur wholeheartedly with his summation of your writing skills.

I too see "Baby" everyday and I can recall everytime-and there were MANY-Nathan and I had to search the entire house upending cushions, chairs and couches, you name it, to find Baby. I came to see the real love and affection that Nathan has for Baby. I don't know that I ever saw Baby as being anything but beautiful. Mostly because I could see the love and true comfort that Baby brought to Nathan. I just see Baby and Buddy as being well "loved."
My brother used to tease Nathan about Baby when my brother would visit. He did that until he saw the true love Nate has for his loveys.
As for my awesome wife Laurie-and the best mother I know-I can cut her slack. She has never before, or since, judged any of our kids' loveys. I am assuming that there was probably some wine-there always is-at the book club and the presence of folks who didn't know the history of Baby. She truly did see Baby for the first time as a stranger would. I'll admit that baby could look a little scary to someone who doesn't know that history. I know how absolutely awful she felt and I'm sure still feels at times and she shouldn't. Nathan knows how much we all love him and his loveys.

Yes, Rosy, "most recent" probably wasn't accurate! (I'm sure I've had many a misjudging since.) But he actually keeps bringing up "the Baby incident" (as I refer to it now). (Did you see his comment on my post about the Loveys?) And the complete abandonment of Baby happened right afterward, so it's always been on my mind. ...

But I'm sure I can happily provide more recent misjudging moments! Hmmm ... how I misjudged his feelings toward a "friend-girl," how I misjudged his worries about eating over at a friends' house, how I misjudged the effects certain movies might have on him. ... *deep sigh* ... gosh, parenting is hard!!!!!!!!!

Laurie, I feel terrible. I remember what a hilarious night that was, and how hysterically, horribly funny we found Baby. And I do remember Nathan showing up on the stairs and hoping that he wasn't hurt. But he was. I hope some day he'll be able to forgive us.

And I feel for you, too. But I can't help thinking, if that was your "most recent" episode of misjudging Nathan then you--and he--are doing a lot right. He was still a small boy, then, if not little...and it seems a long time ago to me!
