Dave -- I almost forgot that Ricky called him "Nernie," but you're RIGHT! And he called Elmo "Melmo." (I learned later that toddlers have trouble starting words with vowels, so they tend to pull a consonant from inside the word and tack it to the front. So cute. ...) And yes, "Nernie" made him into a good young man! ;)

Superman -- So sorry. *Handing over some tissues. ...*

"Tag" (aka Nathan) -- I have a WHOLE post planned about Baby and Buddy, kiddo! (In fact, the post may be about the day we called Baby "creepy." Soooooo sorry. ...

Debi -- Oh, I LOVED your story about Kirk! And that's really funny about the "silky" because Rene was so in love with Pooh bear, but mostly his tag! (Which was very silky.) She would rub it under her nose to fall asleep. That was brilliant of you to cut your nightgowns into strips! (I've heard that's why they put those silky borders on baby blankets, too -- kids love the silk.) That's so funny, too, that you found the "last silky" in an old diaper bag and that you told Kirk the whole story. These big, grown-up baseball players and teen drivers have no idea all the sweet stories we remember about them! :)

I love this post! Having kids myself, I can totally relate. We didn't have the same toys, but the same concept. I nursed my kids and when Kirk was 9 months old he stopped nursing and started walking, but - just before he did, he happened to feel my bra when he was eating and fell in love with the satin material. Rather than have him put his hand up my shirt again (sorry for any weird visuals) I got some old night gowns I didn't wear anymore and cut them into strips. He carried one around until it was slobbery and gross, then I would give him another. He would walk around rubbing it on his face - he too, took it everywhere. We called it his silky and he NEEDED that silky just like Ricky needed Nernie! Natalie had Barney and Justine was less attached to one single one (she switched out her friends from pooh bear, to barney to power rangers - she loved them all). It was so fun watching them care for their friends or need their security blankets. It was funny cause one day when Kirk was bout 16, I ran across the bag that I had used for his diaper bag when he was little and in the front zipper pocket I found his last silky! He, like Ricky, just all of a sudden didn't need it anymore and I never saw it again....I showed Kirk and he laughed, didn't even remember needing it and was a little embarrassed at how it came about! I asked him if he wanted to keep it, but he declined. As for Barney and the gang, well - they are packed up in our attic. Someday I hope to introduce them to my grandkids!! Thanks for writing about this and reminding me of a special time in my childrens lives - with them all growing up so fast, we tend to forget the cute little necessities of the past. Justine just passed her written drivers test and is taking her drive next week - I think with my last baby about to drive, maybe I need the silky!

Wow! Loveys? What a creative word! I bet that your last child's "lovey", would be an amazing story... Even though people might call them "creepy" or "The Things" Baby and Buddy are my friends and I love them. I like your blog posts, and the way you write. You writing sounds like I'm actually talking to you! Good Job!

Laurie, how dare you?!? I'm here at work and almost sobbing like when we realized that we couldn't find Ernie.
You said this so perfectly; I've tried to explain to various people over the years how terribly important "Nernie" and Pooh and "Baby and Buddy" were and are to the fabric of our family and I have never been able to even come close to how beautifully you have.
Thank you!

Although Ricky is a young man now, I still remember him with his "Nernie". So happy to see the person he has become, so sad he had to grow up.
